Health (Japanese: 元気) is an attribute in The Legendary Starfy series. When Starfy or Starly's health reaches zero, he or she will become Done For and the player will receive a Game Over.

In the Game Boy Advance games

In the Game Boy Advance games, health is normally measured in red hearts. Starfy and Starly have a maximum of five hearts shared between them. If Starfy or Starly become hurt by an enemy or obstacle, they can gain an extra heart by collecting five small pearls or one large pearl. All hearts are restored after saving at the Mermaid, clearing or exiting an area or stage.

During a boss battle, the heart system is replaced by a blue bar system of five blue bars for Starfy and a red bar system of five red bars for the boss. Starfy's bar system is identified with a star emblem, and the boss's bar system is identified with a skull emblem.

The game does not count one hit as the deduction of one bar for all bosses. Ogura and Evil also have multiple forms which use one life bar gauge each.

The red heart system is identified by a face of Starfy shaped like a square. The Starfy displays different feelings depending on how much damage the player character has received, as illustrated by the table below.

In Densetsu no Starfy 4

Densetsu no Starfy 4 abandoned the heart system used in previous games for a numerical health system beginning with 50 health points shared between Starfy and Starly. Different enemies deal different amounts of damage, with a select few interactions halving Starfy and Starly's health. Collecting a total of 20 spherical, bumped Heart Gems allows for a maximum of 250 health points.

Small pearls restore Starfy or Starly's health by one point, and big pearls restore Starfy or Starly's health by five. There are special pink pearls that restore Spill points instead of health points.

Saving at the Mermaid, clearing or leaving an area will restore all health points. The Monamu Heal ability requires a full Spill points gauge and may be used to gradually restore health points over time, until the effect runs out.

The numerical health system is also used for boss battles.

In The Legendary Starfy

The Legendary Starfy re-introduced the heart system. Starfy and Starly start with five red hearts by default.

Collecting three triangular shaped Heart Gems will increase the maximum number of hearts by one. Heart Gems are stored on Bunston's Collection. There are three spots for Heart Gems. When a third Heart Gem is collected the Heart Gem icons are removed. There are 15 Heart Gems in the game, which allow for a maximum of 10 hearts.

Collecting five small pearls or one big pearl will restore one health. Saving at the Mermaid, clearing or leaving an area will restore all hearts.

In most boss battles, Starfy uses the basic heart system and bosses use the life bar system.

In the Paper-Cut Crusher Battle, Starfy uses a different heart system of three yellow hearts with Starfy's face on them. One heart is crossed out if Starfy performs the wrong hand in rock-paper-scissors, and Moe gives Starfy advice if he is left with only one heart. If all hearts become crossed out, then the player will receive a Game Over.

The Terrible Trio share one life bar system when they are fought together. Mashtooth has two forms (Mashtooth and Mega Mashtooth), which use one life bar gauge each.
