In ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 2]]'', ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 3]]'' and ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 4]]'', it is also referred to as '''Kisekae''' (Japanese: {{alttext|着せかえ|きせかえ}}), which is short for "kisekae ningyou", meaning "dress-up dolls".

==Overview==

The Stuff screen is basically a menu where the player can select special treasures for [[Starfy]] or [[Starly]] to dress up in. In ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 2]]'' and ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 3]]'', the treasures are only split into two categories; Clothes and Extras (''Accessories'', アクセサリー in Japan). Clothes are basic items that Starfy and Starly can wear, while Extras are items that are wearable/holdable, but do not cover the body, such as the [[Densetsu no Starfy 2/Stuff#Accessories|Baseball Cap]] (Japanese: やきゅうキャップ) from ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 2]]''. Both Clothes and Extras can be worn together.

Clothes and Extras are unlockable by clearing stages, clearing minigames on 'Hard' mode (in ''Densetsu no Starfy 2'' and ''Densetsu no Starfy 3'') and purchasing them from the [[Shop]].

''[[Densetsu no Starfy 4]]'' introduces another category to the Stuff, known as Specials (Japanese: スペシャル). Specials dress up Starfy or Starly completely (excluding a few items such as the Grandfather Clock) and may depict them in the middle of a scene. For example, the Beach Vacation Special from ''[[The Legendary Starfy]]'' depicts Starfy with the Beachwear lying on a bench chair. Specials cannot be worn in combination with Clothes and Extras or a wearable version of [[Bunston]]'s powers.

In ''Densetsu no Starfy 4'', Specials are unlocked through normal means like Clothes and Extras, excluding [[Densetsu no Starfy 4/Stuff#Specials|Nintendo Headquarters]], which is a gift from [[Maniankou]] for purchasing every item from his Shop, excluding [[Heart Gem|Konpeitou]].

In ''The Legendary Starfy'', Specials combine Clothes and Accessories to present a scene. They can only be unlocked by wearing an Extra with a matching set of Clothes.

Some of the Stuff can be bought at [[Lovely]]'s [[Shop]]. Some are unlocked by clearing levels, or clearing them again after beating the game once. Five are unlocked by completing [[Minigames]] on hard. There are 99 Stuff in this game. The game came with stickers of Starfy and some of the stuff.

Sometimes characters give Starfy and Starly stuff as well. There are 99 costumes in this game.

Stuff are normally unlocked by getting some from characters and buying some from [[Maniankou]]'s shop. This is the first appearance of Specials.

[[Densetsu no Starfy 4/Stuff#Stuff that support the microphone|Ten of the Stuff]] support the Nintendo DS microphone, with a few from each category. For these Stuff, blowing into the microphone will cause a special animation to play. Stuff that support the microphone have an animated sprite of [[Moe]] expelling air next to the 'tap the Touch Screen' icon on the top screen ([[File:DnS4 microphone notice.png|50px]]), as well as a different top screen message which tells the player to try to blow into the microphone.

Before this game was released, there was a contest in Japan known as the [[Wanted Kisekae]] contest, where fans could mail over their design for a costume over to Nintendo's headquarters with a chance of their costume being featured in the final game. Six winning designs are in the game, and the entrants had their names featured in the ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 4]]'' Staff Credits.

In Staff Roll 1, the original illustrations of costumes designed by various runner-ups are shown on the touch screen, although none of these made it into the final game.

In a text dump of the game, the text "Spill" (Japanese: スピル) appears directly after 'Special' (Japanese: スペシャル) in a series of names for types of Stuff but appears to be unused here. This may imply that wearable goods based on [[Spill|Spill abilities]] were once planned for the game, but only clothes, extras (accessories) and specials are wearable in the final game.

There is unused text in the Japanese version of ''The Legendary Starfy'' referencing something that is supposedly the equivalent of [[Vehicles List|Vehicles]] from previous games in [[The Legendary Starfy (series)|''The Legendary Starfy'' series]] called Helpful Stuff (Japanese: おたすけグッズ, ''Helpful Goods''). Their name implies that they are a special kind of Stuff. They would apparently be used in boss battles in cooperative play. The Helpful Stuff would account for several elements including fire, ice and poison.

According to some unused text from [[Moe]], there were supposedly eight different kinds of Helpful Stuff planned, however, following the names of [[Roostar|Super Bugawk]] and [[Starfright|Super Vanish]] in the ROM is the text "Helpful Stuff 9" and "Helpful Stuff 10". Although this may imply ten kinds of Helpful Stuff were planned, the names may have been added as placeholders because ten is a nice round figure.

If [[Starfy]] or [[Starly]] wear an Extra with a matching set of Clothes, the player unlocks a Special which combines the two items to present a certain scene. For example, wearing the Beachwear with the Sunglasses unlocks the 'Beach Vacation' Special. This Special features [[Starfy]] sleeping on a beach chair or [[Starly]] standing on the beach chair holding a drink.
