The event showed the development of games on consoles such as the [[wikipedia:Xbox 360|Xbox 360]] and [[wikipedia:Playstation 3|Playstation 3]]. There were development sites for modeling and motion. According to TOSE, "the detailed CG production drew the attention of overseas visitors". It was possible to try out some games in development for the [[Nintendo DS]].

There was an exhibit related to the ''The Legendary Starfy'' series, showing a model of Starfy on a screen and various artwork related to characters in the Nintendo DS game ''[[The Legendary Starfy]]'' (the fifth game in the series), including [[Starfy]], the [[Mermaid]], [[Moe]], a [[Fwip]], [[The Squirts]] and [[Starfy]]. [[List of The Legendary Starfy series merchandise#Promotional posters|A large poster]] of ''The Legendary Starfy'' was also shown.

People could draw a picture on a computer and it would be reflected in a game.

'''Prerelease information''' refers to information about video games and related media prior to the release candidate. Prerelease information may be gathered from a number of sources including magazines, developer interviews, advertisements and early game footage.

Something similar to prerelease information is [[unused content]]. Unused content refers to things found in a game's code that are not used in normal gameplay. Examples may include unused images and models, music, text (usually development or gameplay related) or unused game mechanics. These give insight about the development of the game even if some of the content was not intended to be added to the final game from an earlier date. Yamagami notes that after six months in the game's development, plans were changed so that players could take control of the floating character instead of pushing it around.

Planning on this game began as early as November 1995 with the work of [[Hitoshi Yamagami]] ([[Nintendo]]) and later [[Yasuhiro Minamimoto]] ([[TOSE]]) as [[untitled balloon/bubble pushing games]] involving indirectly pushing a balloon, and later moving a Nintendo character in a bubble. At some point the game was changed to control the object manually, as the game was considered not very fun.

Development on this game continued through 1998 and as such. At some point, both a starfish and a jellyfish were considerations for changing the bubble to a marine creature to match the theme of the game. Nintendo encouraged TOSE to rework this game for the [[nwiki:Game Boy Color|Game Boy Color]]. In 2000, the Game Boy Color version underwent a period of promotion, where details about the game began to surface on the official Japanese Nintendo website. A trailer of the game was presented in 2000's Nintendo World event, amongst highly anticipated titles such as ''[[mariowiki:Luigi's Mansion|Luigi's Mansion]]'' and ''[[mariowiki:Super Mario 128|Super Mario 128]]''.

As the game was approaching its release for the Game Boy Color, it was again canceled and rebuilt for the Game Boy Advance which was only going to be released in 2001. Starfy was apparently going to be purely a starfish, until he was made to fall down from the sky, which supposedly invoked a community policy for TOSE to reply that Starfy is neither a star or a starfish when asked.

There are various differences between the Game Boy Color version and the final Game Boy Advance version still noticeable on Nintendo of Japan's page about the trial demo. For example, the official logo and some of the character artwork and names of characters were changed later in development, including [[Moe|Kyorosuke]] (Moe) who was originally known as "Kyororon". It should be noted however that the [[Nintendo World#Nintendo Space World 2001|Nintendo Space World 2001]] trial demo for the [[Game Boy Advance]] was promoted with the old logo used during the Game Boy Color period. There was also character artwork for the Game Boy Advance version from early in development, which although different (with the exception of [[Moe]]), were not final.

:::Locations could stay, but I think it would be awkward having Stages (or worlds if you call them that) and Locations. There aren't any locations that I can think of that aren't stages. It doesn't really matter which one we chose because they end up being having the same contents. Did you know there are mangas for the Starfy series? There are mangas for 1, 2, 3, and 4. I haven't been able to find pictures of 3's manga, but I have found some pictures of the other 3:

I haven't been able to find the full mangas, but the pictures look pretty good! If anybody here has the mangas, you should add some pictures from them and info about them. Maybe they have some things that weren't in the games. It also makes me question if we will ever see a Starfy anime (Although there are anime shorts/commercials, those don't really count)...

I was going to PM the other staff about this via the NIWA forums, but I thought that it would be more efficient to discuss it here. ==Densetsu no ''Stafy'' or ''Starfy''?==

A few months ago, ''Densetsu no Stafy'' [#] and ''Densetsu no Starfy'' [#] were duplicate articles, so {{user|The Forgotten Beast}} moved all Densetsu no Stafy to Densetsu no Starfy. Should we stick to this plan of using ''Densetsu no Starfy''?
:I didn't go about changing every instance of 'Stafy' to 'Starfy', but did when editing some of the articles which needed to be edited for other things like adding navboxes because I wasn't really sure what we thought about it and didn't want to go around changing absolutely everything. On one hand, Stafy is the original Japanese title and the Game Boy Advance games and ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 4|Densetsu no Sta(rf)y 4]]'' were never released outside of Japan, though on the other hand Starfy is the localized name, and calling sutafī 'Stafy' assumes Japanese phonology for an English Wiki, where Starfy is still called Stafy in ''[[The Legendary Starfy]]'' in Japan. ==NIWA Meeting Round up==
Hello, recently, there was a NIWA Staff Meeting. I didn't know about this until recently, so I decided to join in to represent us.

#So, during the meeting, founder of NIWA Liam asked for us to add more interwiki links to our sidebar and such, this will increase Google Rating, Overall traffic, etc. Well, We can also add to our traffic by creating an Affiliates section. Here is an example: [http://mutecity.org/index.php/F-Zero_Wiki:Affiliates here]. This could help us greatly. We would need a banner, and a wave of affiliates. I can affiliate us with F-Zero Wiki and Icaruspedia, but we need more than just that. So, what do you guys think?

I would recommend two really active Starfy fan-sites, both in Japanese. I have searched around a long time trying to find good maps for the basic layout of each of he stages. So I decided I'd do them for myself. The maps won't be so detailed I think. They will only contain basic information like which door leads to which and where is the boss located. I wondered it'd be cool if there where maps with little spoiler information or little guidelines, just like the super Metroid map. I think it would fit Starfy well since after beating the game, the post-game missions (like obtaining all the treasures in ''Densetsu no Stafy'') require a lot of exploration in each level. :I know, I'm replying to a 2 year old question, but since it's still an issue, I'll explain something I came across recently that may help. Over on [[https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Uyd2ipzetepgl63c the Mediawiki Support Desk]], I found out some information about an extension that lets you delete a ton of accounts at once. The downside is that the extension connected to this is archived, meaning it most likely won't work on this wiki. HOWEVER, if you were an admin of course, you could manually delete each of the accounts that haven't made any edits. Once that's done, it's just the matter of keeping an eye for new accounts just like this. I know that it would take a very long time, but maybe creating (or promoting) a few new admins would speed the process. An F-Zero attraction was announced, and it seems like a Yoshi and Balloon Fight attraction will be coming. Nintendo posted pictures of all the series icons that will be in NintendoLand, and there was a Yoshi Egg and a Balloon. Is P-100 being published by Nintendo? Game and Wario looks interesting. Rayman Legends looks fantastic. I don't like Scribblenauts all too much, because I always come up with boring words. The "core" games announced look fun. Though, I'm not interested in ZombiU or Batman.

:Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Paper Mario: Sticker Star look fun. Nintendo shouldn't have announced those until this year, in my honest opinion though. I'm still anticipating Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Heroes of Ruin. I believe Nintendo gave other third-party titles the spotlight, but I cannot remember which. There is still the 3DS thing today, I think Animal Crossing will be showed off, and hopefully a couple new titles. Next year's E3 will be much better, I think. At least I get to keep my money this year, lol. I'll just ask for everything for Christmas (except for the Wii U) since I have a lot of relatives.

It's my pleasure. I have been working on and off on The Legendary Starfy in regards to speedrunning for years, and recently decided to get into the Japan only games. Very enjoyable series. I pretty much found those glitches while speedrunning the games, and I just found another graphical glitch while doing a run of the first game, which i just took the time to learn, (https://www.twitch.tv/diamond44444444/v/107860449). In regards to the correction for the enemy cards, I spent about 45 minutes looking for the Upon in 9-3 when I was getting 100% and I didn't want anybody else to fall victim to that.
I saw your channel on youtube a few months ago (At least I think it's your channel) and saw the skip you found in 5-5 of Densetsu no Stafy 2 and other things. That skip in particular was pretty cool and saves approximately 40-60 seconds in a speedrun, but given that it's already over an hour into a 4+ hour run I really won't be doing it in an RTA.

On the topic of the 5-5 skip and the original person who discovered it, I was going through that TASlog that you have in the description of that video and was looking at the video names for Stafy. A few ones really caught my eye, including the stafy3-stapy-doublejump (I'm implying that it applies to Stafi), the stafy3-rocket, the stafy2-cornerboost, and especially the stafy1_pearl_glitch. I would presume that you have accessed these files before since you found the 5-5 skip from it, so are you able to access these files and tell me what they are comprised of? I'm also curious what exactly is in the stafy2 parts of those files, since the game has not had much development in terms of speedrunning except for a really bad RTA that I did and an incomplete TAS that comprises only 3 levels.
In regards to the stafy1_pearl_glitch, if it pertains to obtaining pearls fast I would really like to know about it, since grinding pearls in that game for a 100% speedrun would be extremely tedious and annoying, almost as much so as in The Legendary Starfy 100%, which requires ~30 goes through 9-7 to get enough pearls. Gunman Clive was a pretty decent run 'n gun platformer. You can even play as a duck that can only dodge everything. While Flowey is scary, the rest of the characters aren't that bad. Your character can literally go on a date with a couple of the bosses.

So I've managed to locate a "master table" of every object in every map. There's a table at <tt>0x15C018</tt> that's 23 pointers long, 1 for each stage. Inside each of those pointers is another table of pointers corresponding to each area, and inside ''those'' pointers is another table for each map, which leads to 4 bytes telling you how many objects are in the map, and the next 4 bytes are a pointer to the map's array of object data (24 bytes specify each object). I've been meaning to put all my findings into a Google site to be easier to read, it's taking a while 'cause I can't make classic Google sites anymore and have to make a "New" one. (this is also a reminder to migrate ''your'' Google site soon).

This is another situation where editing the ROM directly is just much more efficient. For a fast way to look at objects, I changed the 4 bytes at <tt>0x19CC98</tt>. This is <tt>0x00000003</tt> by default and affects one of the first pearls you see in Stage 1-1 (subsequent visits). To get the insect, I just changed this value to <tt>0x00000005</tt>. I can most likely change this pearl to other objects (like doors), but they'll break unless I adjust the behavior parameters (the 16 following bytes in the ROM). Maybe Starfy 3 and maybe even 1 use the same kind of data structure? Interesting, while speculating, I wonder if it's in Starfy 1 too, and/or what kind of unused objects the original may have. == Main Page Social Media Links==
I believe the social media portion of the main page is in need of an overhaul. To start, the Pufftop Discord server has effectively replaced the Starfy subreddit it spawned from, and is multitudes more popular than it ever was. I believe a link to the Discord would should replace the link to the inactive subreddit. Next, Colorful Planet for years now has failed at their end of the bargain with the banner-for-banner relationship. The site is almost entirely scrubbed of any Starfy content, including referrals to this Wiki. Further, Starfy's Journal is a decade old unfinished web comic that is currently a dead link. Now is the perfect opportunity to replace it with a link to the Star of Sand Ocean Wiki, a new and regularly updated pair of Starfy web comics. Furthermore, I do not believe that the Starfy Fan Club should have been featured in the first place. It was clearly made by someone young in their spare time, and has not been updated since. Finally, the YouTube topic function has updated and the current link is dead. Now there is an individual channel for each of the five games.

Two more things. First, I think there should be a link to the [http://sutahimitu.fc2web.com/sutadou/sutafi-doumei.html Starfy Alliance]. It is also an old website without updates, but I think it would be cool if people sill made themselves members of the alliance. He/she dropped his Oden and had his/her [[Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle]] damaged, so Gaganmo asks [[Starfy]], [[Starly]] and [[Moe]] to find the Oden and a new Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle. Gaganmo teaches Starfy the [[Glide]] ability so that he can Glide over to a door that leads to the items.

Later, Starfy, Starly and Moe find [[Jojiro]] in his shop who gives them a new Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle and an Oden for free. When they return to Gaganmo, he/she wears the new Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle and gives Starfy a [[Treasure|Treasure Box]] containing [[Densetsu no Starfy 3/Stuff#Accessories|another Oden]], which becomes available as an [[Stuff|Accessory]].

The '''''The Legendary Starfy'' series''', known in Japan as the '''''Densetsu no Stafy'' series''' (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィーシリーズ), it is debatable if it was formally known as the '''Legend of Stafy''' (from the ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga]]'' cameo) and '''The Legend of Stafy''' series (from the credits of the leaked [[iQue]] prototype leaked long after it was produced) is a video game series that was published by [[Nintendo]] and developed by [[TOSE]].

The series is about [[Starfy]] (Japanese: スタフィー), "a legend" who is the prince of a kingdom high above the ocean, above the clouds called [[Pufftop]]. Joining Starfy's adventure is Starfy's best friend [[Moe]] the clam and after the events of ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 2]]'', Starfy's younger sister, [[Starly]]. In all five games, something causes Starfy to fall into the ocean and fight evil. So far, all of the Starfy games have been released exclusively for handheld platforms.

The games are officially known as "Marine Action" (Japanese: マリンアクション) games due to a good portion of the game taking place underwater, although not all stages in the games are set underwater, however, official creative genre names for Nintendo games is not uncommon.

Later, he worked together with [[TOSE]] producer [[Yasuhiro Minamimoto]]<ref>[http://ds.nintendolife.com/news/2009/05/interviews_nintendotose_the_legendary_starfy Interviews: Nintendo/TOSE - The Legendary Starfy - DS News @ Nintendo Life (with insight about the development of Densetsu no Starfy)]</ref> and the end result, ''[[Densetsu no Starfy]]'', starred Starfy; a starfish like creature with traits of a celestial star, although a jellyfish was another consideration; who could have speculatively became a character such as the [[Jueri]].

The first game in the series, ''Densetsu no Starfy'' was originally meant to be released for the [[nwiki:Game Boy Color|Game Boy Color]]. A trial demo of the Game Boy Color game was shown at [[Nintendo World#Nintendo Space World 2000|Nintendo Space World 2000]] but development later moved to the [[Game Boy Advance]]. Various changes were made during the transition for example, the Japanese name of Moe changed from "Kyororon" to "Kyorosuke". The fifth game, ''The Legendary Starfy'' is significantly more child-friendly, and introduced a completely different art-style, making the characters look chibi or like plush dolls.

Conversely, the story and tone of ''Densetsu no Starfy 3'' is known for being particularly dark, with a personification of [[Evil]] and slavery, confirmation of the actual death of three characters (soft spoiler: [[Ogura|1]], [[Kyorozou|2]] and [[Puchi Ogura|3 (a group of characters)]]) and other potentially questionable themes for an otherwise child-friendly game such as an evil clown called [[Mad Piero]]. ''Densetsu no Starfy 2'' also alluded to the death of [[Moe's mother]], though was less heavy in its portrayals. Unofficially, people have wanted or expressed interest in [[fan translations of The Legendary Starfy series]] in terms of hacking the ROM to actually play an English game, such as the early Blackmage907. After a dormancy in the conceptual stages of this (circa 2012-), of which the conceptual stage was important because of Normmatt's variable-width font hack, [[User:Torchickens]] and Pablitox formed Starfy Translation Team and the related Discord group years later. In between that, Torchickens uploaded experiments of hacking English text into ''Densetsu no Starfy'' of her own, via her secondary YouTube channel (/user/Torchickens), using both her hex editor/limited GBA programming knowledge and also making use of the Atlas setup (a tool for applying fan translations to the ROM quicker) and ''Densetsu no Starfy'' text dump produced during the conceptual stages.

Today the ROM hack of ''Densetsu no Starfy'' by Starfy Translation Team in terms of just the text is mainly complete. Work needs to be started on texts stored as graphics, and typos and newly introduced glitches need to be fixed. Fan translation work has since been started on some of the other ''Densetsu no Starfy'' games.

Without consent, reproduction carts containing the fan translation have been sold online; i.e. there have been some Game Boy Advance carts in a blue shell with a sticker with ''[[The Legendary Starfy]]'' art and a seascape but containing the fan translation beta, however the reception to this in Starfy Translation Team has been mild. This can happen with fan translations, and may encourage some projects to add like a 'splash screen' noting details like it is an unofficial product, is not to be sold, after the game is booted-up, like the one in the [[wikibound:Mother 3|Mother 3]] fan translation initiated by Clyde Mandelin.

Other non-ROM hacking translation groups or people are important, such as the works of Autumchild on YouTube, or Starfy Wiki itself. Prior to this, there were a few English fans who attempted to interpret the games, such as via the [https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ds/930290-densetsu-no-starfy-4/faqs/48112 the Tobira Majin translation guide by NessEggman]. There have been two series of ''The Legendary Starfy'' series manga collated in [[wikipedia:tankōbon|tankōbon]] form. The first series, simply known as ''Densetsu no Starfy'' was based on the events of ''[[Densetsu no Starfy]]'', ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 2]]'' and ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 3]]''. It was frequently submitted to issues of [[wikipedia:CoroCoro Comic|CoroCoro Comic]] from June 2002 (before the official release of the game ''Densetsu no Starfy'' in June 2002) until October 2005, and it was illustrated by manga artist [[Yumiko Sudō]]. The manga was published by [[Shogakukan]] and Nintendo and TOSE own the copyright to the tankōbon.

The second series, known as ''[[Densetsu no Starfy R]]'' (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィーR) ran from April 2006 until April 2008, and it was illustrated by [[Suzuo Yadaka]] (Japanese: 矢高鈴央, やたかすずお) as a follow up to the original ''Densetsu no Starfy'' manga series based on the events of ''[[Densetsu no Starfy 4]]''. ''Densetsu no Starfy R'' is an abbreviation of ''Densetsu no Starfy Returns'' (Japanese: デンセツノスタフィーリターンズ). Like the first series, it was published by [[Shogakukan]] and submitted to CoroCoro Comic. Nintendo and TOSE own the copyright to the tankōbon.

Included in the November 2008 issue of [[wikipedia:Enterbrain|Enterbrain]]'s [[Video Game Magazine]] is a small manga called [[Video Game Magazine|Starfy's Adventure]] (Japanese: スタフィーのぼうけん) based on ''[[The Legendary Starfy]]'', as well as three manga included in the magazine itself called [[Defeat the Enemy!]], [[Hidden Room Discovery!]] and [[Combined by Transformation!]].

==Localization of the series overseas==
===English===
Although there are currently five games in ''The Legendary Starfy'' series, ''The Legendary Starfy'' (''Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daiiru Kaizokudan'' in Japan) is the only game to have been localized and officially released outside of Japan. Nintendo of America officially localized ''The Legendary Starfy'' and released the game on June 8, 2009, just over a year from the Japanese release and one day earlier than scheduled. Nintendo of Australia later released and produced the game in Australasia in October 2009, although currently no other branches of Nintendo have officially released the game elsewhere. The Australian and North American ROMs are exactly the same, but their packaging is slightly different.

====Prototypes====
An English localisation prototype for the first game also exists with its own font.<ref>[https://twitter.com/LuigiBlood/status/1273395758201475072/photo/2 Screenshots from an anonymous 4ch user, mirrored on Twitter by LuigiBlood]</ref> It appears to have been intended for an official English release, based on the account of an anonymous owner of a prototype, but cancelled. In the prototype version, [[Moe]] is known as "Kyoro" (shortened from his Japanese name Kyorosuke), and one of the conversations with him features profanity (an easy mistake to mistake from translation of derogatory Japanese words without regard to connotations, audience and impact).

The prototype came with 128M flash memory in a regular colored Game Pak but resembles a special type of cartridge such as a rumble or tilt cart. It is also marked with a red sticker with the writing [[Tose]] 四条分室 (Shijo Branch Office) No 062 (possibly Shijo Street in Kyoto; the city where Tose operates). The prototype was found on an eBay listing from a seller of various prototypes, according to an October 2018 archived 4ch thread.<ref>[https://warosu.org/vr/thread/5078072 Archived 4ch thread]</ref>

===Chinese (iQue) prototypes===
In March 2019, unreleased but official Chinese versions of ''Densetsu no Starfy'' and ''Densetsu no Starfy 2'' were leaked to the public. These were reportedly intended for the [[wikipedia:iQue|iQue]] editions of Nintendo hardware (likely the iQue Game Boy Advance), which are Chinese equivalents to the English hardware. ===Staff views on localization of past games===
Nintendo of America appear to have no plans of localizing past games in the series. In a 2009 conference call set up by Nintendo between [http://nintendolife.com Nintendo Life] and six developers of ''The Legendary Starfy'', producer Hitoshi Yamagami joked that the reason why Starfy took so long to debut in the US was that he 'was swimming all the way from Japan' and explained that the series was always developed for a Japanese audience. The developers stated that they always wanted to bring Starfy to the US, but that Nintendo of America deemed the games 'too Japanese' for American audiences. In fact, various elements of the games such as certain [[Item]]s and [[Stuff]] are full of Japanese cultural references. Hitoshi Yamagami, however, stated in the conference call that although TOSE had no intention of releasing the previous ''The Legendary Starfy'' series games, the possibly of releasing them exists "if Starfy proves to be a huge hit and fans demand that they have the first four Starfy games".

According to Yasuhiro Minamimoto, the development team were conscious of the sales of ''The Legendary Starfy'' from the planning stage, so he feels that is why the game made it out of Japan. Despite this, there are various [[The Legendary Starfy/Regional differences|localization changes]] in the fifth game, where for example the manga style cutscenes in ''Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daiiru Kaizokudan'' were changed and made to read from left to right instead of right to left.
