Game Software Development Spot (Japanese: ゲームソフトの開発現場) was a two day event held by TOSE; developers of the The Legendary Starfy series, which took place between October 24th and October 25th 2009 at the second floor of the Kyoto International Manga Museum.

It was part of the Kyoto Wisdom and Knowledge Exhibition (Japanese: 京都知恵と力の博覧会), sponsored by the Expo Promotion Association (Japanese: 博覧会推進協議). About 1100 people attended.

It coincided with the OIKE Festa; which is a festival held in held in Kyoto, Japan at Oike street (Japanese: 御池通) every Autumn, appealing to people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Event
The event showed the development of games on consoles such as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. There were development sites for modeling and motion. According to TOSE, "the detailed CG production drew the attention of overseas visitors". It was possible to try out some games in development for the Nintendo DS.

There was an exhibit related to the The Legendary Starfy series, showing a model of Starfy on a screen and various artwork related to characters in the Nintendo DS game The Legendary Starfy (the fifth game in the series), including Starfy, the Mermaid, Moe, a Fwip, The Squirts and Starfy. A large poster of The Legendary Starfy was also shown.

People could draw a picture on a computer and it would be reflected in a game.
Note that the Extra! option is missing from the List. <br/> Scanned from the Game Boy Encyclopedia, 2001 edition]]
For a list of prerelease information in The Legendary Starfy series, see this article.

Prerelease information refers to information about video games and related media prior to the release candidate. Prerelease information may be gathered from a number of sources including magazines, developer interviews, advertisements and early game footage.

Something similar to prerelease information is unused content. Unused content refers to things found in a game's code that are not used in normal gameplay. Examples may include unused images and models, music, text (usually development or gameplay related) or unused game mechanics. These give insight about the development of the game even if some of the content was not intended to be added to the final game from an earlier date. Densetsu no Starfy 4 and the Japanese version of Super Princess Peach have unused assets that suggest more than one game may have been in development at the same time. Developer notes and build dates are common unused content.

Types
There are a number of different forms of prerelease information.

Conceptual information
Conceptual information is information originating before the direction of the game is finalized. It may be found in interviews, or even in the form of unused content in the final game, although in that case it is difficult to verify the date from which the information came from.

In a 2009 conference call set up by Nintendo between Nintendo Life and six developers of The Legendary Starfy, Hitoshi Yamagami suggests that the direction on the game that was finalized as Densetsu no Starfy began as a considerably different project, where Hitoshi Yamagami and Yasuhiro Minamimoto worked on the idea of a "floating character being pushed through [a] maze". Yamagami notes that after six months in the game's development, plans were changed so that players could take control of the floating character instead of pushing it around.

There are two types of conceptual information, alpha and pre-alpha information. Pre-alpha information is from before an early revision of the game is made, while alpha information is information from a revision of a game that is not feature complete. One form of pre-alpha information is concept art.

Concept art
Concept art is artwork by the game developers depicting how characters, objects and other things should look in the game when it is developed. Early concept art may look significantly different to characters in the final game. Sometimes developers may add concept art to the final game as appears to be the case with Densetsu no Starfy 4s Staff Roll 2.

Information from a workable game
This is information that originated from an early build of the game that is playable to an extent. It is sometimes referred to as 'beta' information, although 'beta' is a misnomer because the game may not be feature complete, as seems to be the case with the Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy Color, which did not feature the Extra! option from the List at some point in development. Prototype information may be a more accurate term.

Unused content from the release candidate
Things found in the final game's code that are not used in normal gameplay. Such information can give an insight into the game's development. It can be difficult to tell when something unused was added to the game's code and it is possible that some unused content was never intended to be seen in the final game, such as Densetsu no Starfys debug menu.

Inner workings of the game
Through hacking, decompilation, disassembly or trial and error, the inner workings of the game's code can be analyzed and things that were not intended to be found can be seen. This can reveal things such as bugs and glitches that the developers did not rectify, the game's internal name by checking the ROM's header and in cases where it is possible to decompile the game, internal filenames.

Internally, The Legendary Starfy is known as "STAFY5". One example of a glitch in The Legendary Starfy series is the demo glitch from Densetsu no Starfy. The developers did not account for Starfy losing another heart while being caught by the Imadame with no hearts left, causing an underflow glitch and revealing a flaw in the programming.

Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy, and later for the Game Boy Color was a tentative Starfy game that was eventually canceled, though it was eventually released in the form of Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy Advance on September 6, 2002. Any initial plans of releasing Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy Color were abandoned in anticipation of the release of the Game Boy Advance. <br clear=left>

History
See also: Nintendo World, Next Generation World Hobby Fair

Planning on this game began as early as November 1995 with the work of Hitoshi Yamagami (Nintendo) and later Yasuhiro Minamimoto (TOSE) as untitled balloon/bubble pushing games involving indirectly pushing a balloon, and later moving a Nintendo character in a bubble. At some point the game was changed to control the object manually, as the game was considered not very fun.

Development on this game continued through 1998 and as such. At some point, both a starfish and a jellyfish were considerations for changing the bubble to a marine creature to match the theme of the game. Nintendo encouraged TOSE to rework this game for the Game Boy Color. In 2000, the Game Boy Color version underwent a period of promotion, where details about the game began to surface on the official Japanese Nintendo website. A trailer of the game was presented in 2000's Nintendo World event, amongst highly anticipated titles such as Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario 128.

As the game was approaching its release for the Game Boy Color, it was again canceled and rebuilt for the Game Boy Advance which was only going to be released in 2001. Starfy was apparently going to be purely a starfish, until he was made to fall down from the sky, which supposedly invoked a community policy for TOSE to reply that Starfy is neither a star or a starfish when asked.

There are various differences between the Game Boy Color version and the final Game Boy Advance version still noticeable on Nintendo of Japan's page about the trial demo. For example, the official logo and some of the character artwork and names of characters were changed later in development, including Kyorosuke (Moe) who was originally known as "Kyororon". It should be noted however that the Nintendo Space World 2001 trial demo for the Game Boy Advance was promoted with the old logo used during the Game Boy Color period. There was also character artwork for the Game Boy Advance version from early in development, which although different (with the exception of Moe), were not final.
*During development, both the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color prototypes' names were marked （仮称, tentative）, which may suggest the name was not fully decided, but the game was released as Densetsu no Starfy anyway.

I was thinking about adding either "World" or "Levels", along with "Minigames" to the contents part of the page, but it would seem kind of redundant with the "Locations" part there... - BattleFranky202 21:08, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

:I think we should scrap "locations" for "worlds" (which are officially called stages btw) and "levels." I also think we should remove "playable characters" since there are only 2 (unless you count Bunston and his transformations) --Starfy 17:50, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

::Yeah, good point. Should we just leave 6 contents up there? - BattleFranky202 18:52, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
::: I don't know what you mean, but whatever works --Starfy 00:06, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

::So far, there are 8 contents: Characters, Playable characters, Enemies, Bosses, Locations, Transformations, Gameplay, Minigames. You suggested we take down "playable characters" and replace "locations" with "worlds". I think locations should stay, but you're right, playable characters have to go. - BattleFranky202 02:01, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

:::Locations could stay, but I think it would be awkward having Stages (or worlds if you call them that) and Locations. There aren't any locations that I can think of that aren't stages. It doesn't really matter which one we chose because they end up being having the same contents. If you wanted to reduce the number of categories on the front page you could combine transformations with gameplay and call it something like "abilities" --Starfy 13:23, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Densetsu No Stafy Mangas
Did you know there are mangas for the Starfy series? There are mangas for 1, 2, 3, and 4. I haven't been able to find pictures of 3's manga, but I have found some pictures of the other 3:

Volume 1 cover

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_file_photo/143141.gif

Volume 2 cover

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_file_photo/143142.gif

Volume 4 Cover

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_file_photo/140685.gif

Here is one of the pages of Volume 1:

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_sample/143141.gif

Here is one of the pages of Volume 2:

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_sample/143142.gif

And here is one of the pages of Volume 4:

http://sbookg.s-book.com/sol/sky_gif/tanko_sample/140685.gif

I haven't been able to find the full mangas, but the pictures look pretty good! If anybody here has the mangas, you should add some pictures from them and info about them. Maybe they have some things that weren't in the games. It also makes me question if we will ever see a Starfy anime (Although there are anime shorts/commercials, those don't really count)...

Duplicate articles
We have duplicates of the Densetsu no Stafy 1, 2 and 3 articles using the US localized Starfy (e.g. Densetsu no Starfy) in their titles instead of Stafy. Should these pages be converted into redirects? --Torchickens 21:41, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

The Poll
What just happened with the poll??? It seems about 21 voters or so just joined and voted on the poll. It seems a lot of them voted for Mashtooth (Probably because he is the villain from the only English game in the series so far)...

Domain Downtime
Starfy Wiki's domain will be transferring tomorrow to a different registrar, during this time (~7 days) http://starfywiki.org will most likely be unavailable. I have setup http://starfy.gam1ng.com as a temporary fix so that it is sill possible to work on the wiki. Sorry for the rush of this but it needs to be done. The transfer will start sometime tomorrow (2/22/2011). I ask that you start using http://starfy.gam1ng.com
that way if there are any issues I can solve that before the transfer. You can contact me by e-mailing: tappy(at)zeldafan.net thanks.

*Update: Transfer will not begin until Feb 27 2011 12:00AM (EST)
*Transfer has been completed. Everything should be working as it used to. You can return to using http://starfywiki.org
NIWA Contact page
I was going to PM the other staff about this via the NIWA forums, but I thought that it would be more efficient to discuss it here. On the NIWA contact page there is no section for Starfy Wiki. The Forgotten Beast and I unfortunately haven't heard a response from BattleFranky since April. Does anybody in particular want to take the responsibility of responding to emails, or are the others fine if I just use my email address (chickasaurus@hotmail.co.uk)?

Additionally, should we have a Starfy board on NIWA forums, or should it link back to Starfy Wiki, what does everyone else think? I'm addressing this to everyone who reads this.
Densetsu no Stafy or Starfy?
A few months ago, Densetsu no Stafy [#] and Densetsu no Starfy [#] were duplicate articles, so The Forgotten Beast moved all Densetsu no Stafy to Densetsu no Starfy. Should we stick to this plan of using Densetsu no Starfy?
:I didn't go about changing every instance of 'Stafy' to 'Starfy', but did when editing some of the articles which needed to be edited for other things like adding navboxes because I wasn't really sure what we thought about it and didn't want to go around changing absolutely everything. On one hand, Stafy is the original Japanese title and the Game Boy Advance games and Densetsu no Sta(rf)y 4 were never released outside of Japan, though on the other hand Starfy is the localized name, and calling sutafī 'Stafy' assumes Japanese phonology for an English Wiki, where Starfy is still called Stafy in The Legendary Starfy in Japan. ==NIWA Meeting Round up==
Hello, recently, there was a NIWA Staff Meeting. I didn't know about this until recently, so I decided to join in to represent us.

#So, during the meeting, founder of NIWA Liam asked for us to add more interwiki links to our sidebar and such, this will increase Google Rating, Overall traffic, etc. Well, We can also add to our traffic by creating an Affiliates section. Here is an example: here. This could help us greatly. We would need a banner, and a wave of affiliates. I can affiliate us with F-Zero Wiki and Icaruspedia, but we need more than just that. So, what do you guys think?
#We have also been encouraged to reach out to other sites for affiliation. Maybe not Starfy related, but general Nintendo fan sites?
Affiliation ideas
:There is a web-comic called Starfy's Journal, but I don't know how active they are at the present moment, as their last update was in March, 2010. I would recommend two really active Starfy fan-sites, both in Japanese. The first is Colorful Planet - it's also a Zelda, Pokémon, MOTHER and Metroid fansite and it's also a good resource for Starfy music. There is also 今更　りとるY様 - a Starfy fan-art blog who usually have weekly activity. I'm sure they'd appreciate us, but the language barrier would make it difficult to communicate. Star_Light, however who has experience with the Japanese language may be able to help us in that respect.

:As for non-Starfy, non-NIWA sites it would probably be best to look for Nintendo fan-sites actively seeking affiliation. Unfortunately I don't know of such sites in particular, because many Nintendo sites like GoNintendo and NinDB are already well-established and may not be interested in us. :( The N-Wiki is affiliated with a German Nintendo Wiki though... --Torchickens 22:01, 21 January 2012 (EST)

:I've got nothing on non-NIWA websites, but being one of the heads of Donkey Kong Wiki I declare an affiliation between my two main wikis! (except we don't have a banner for DK Wiki...). I'm also the head and founder of numerous wikis on Wikia, can wikia wikis affiliate or do we have a rule about that? -The Forgotten Beast 22:26, 21 January 2012 (EST)
::I would agree with affiliating with Donkey Kong Wiki :). I don't know if we can link to Wikia wikis unfortunately, I'll look into it on the NIWA forums tomorrow. Fundamentally, I don't see a problem; and although to a degree we stand against what Wikia is doing, I don't believe there should be the stigma against Wikia communities themselves, and I think that's something which should probably be stressed by the NIWA community. On the Starfy Wikia, I believe we were affiliated with Starfy Fanon Wiki? --Torchickens 22:41, 21 January 2012 (EST)
:::We were affiliated with the fanon wiki but it appeared to have sort of died out. -The Forgotten Beast 22:44, 21 January 2012 (EST)
:That's a shame about Starfy Fanon Wiki. Well, I had a look through the NIWA forums and it looks like there isn't any hard rule on not being able to affiliate with a non-independent Wiki. When Wikisimpsons requested affiliation with NIWA, they were originally still hosted on Shoutbox and the consensus was that they shouldn't be declined hosting for being hosted on Shoutbox. In the same discussion, Adam from Wikirby later suggested that if a good Wikia site ever wanted to affiliate with NIWA, then it would be "foolish to turn them down". For this reason, I don't think there's anything against us being able to affiliate with the other Wikis which you manage. We haven't got a response from the art requests thread yet on SEIWA Alliance yet, but since then Starphoria designed a banner. Should we tell them that we are ready for affiliation, or wait a little longer first? --Torchickens 09:30, 22 January 2012 (EST)
:::I would make sure the Wikia wiki is well developed at least and quite active. Pikmin Fanon is affiliated with Fantendo, so Wikia wikis are not against a rule. :Apply our current skin to a brand new skin. :3 Maybe something like Fire Emblem Wiki, Golden Sun Universe, etc. Everything would be the same, with the same background and a similar sidebar, same color scheme, same transparency image, and same rounded tabs, but it would look awesome. It would look bigger and we could make it look even more of a seascape. Heck, we could even have an image of the surface of the ocean where the header is. It would look awesome. == Starfy Wiki Is Under Attack ==

The headline says it all. Someone who works at the same place as me (I would love to be more specific than that...) is in the final stages of planning a massive attack on this wiki. He's been gloating about it for days on end. He knows this wiki well, and he's telling me that the attack will involve hijacking a number of accounts on this wiki. I dread to think how he intends to do this; I have a suspicion he may once have been (or may still be) an admin. To the best of my knowledge, the attack will be launched today or tomorrow. Please take heed! --Sid (talk) 23:22, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
I am thinking it would be cool to add a new section about Stage Maps.
I have searched around a long time trying to find good maps for the basic layout of each of he stages. So I decided I'd do them for myself. The maps won't be so detailed I think. They will only contain basic information like which door leads to which and where is the boss located. I wondered it'd be cool if there where maps with little spoiler information or little guidelines, just like the super Metroid map. I think it would fit Starfy well since after beating the game, the post-game missions (like obtaining all the treasures in Densetsu no Stafy) require a lot of exploration in each level. I am going to begin to work on the maps today or soon enough, so feel free to tell me if like or don't like the idea. == Mass block ==
There is a mass delete feature we use, I wonder if anyone knowledgeable about MediaWiki knows if there's an equivalent to mass block the spam accounts which keep coming. Torchickens (talk) 22:40, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
:I know, I'm replying to a 2 year old question, but since it's still an issue, I'll explain something I came across recently that may help. Over on the Mediawiki Support Desk, I found out some information about an extension that lets you delete a ton of accounts at once. The downside is that the extension connected to this is archived, meaning it most likely won't work on this wiki. HOWEVER, if you were an admin of course, you could manually delete each of the accounts that haven't made any edits. Once that's done, it's just the matter of keeping an eye for new accounts just like this. I know that it would take a very long time, but maybe creating (or promoting) a few new admins would speed the process. Even I would be happy to help. --Logangsta (talk) 23:53, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

Eh, I'll probably update all the track names eventually, right now I'm taking screenshots of all the key items in the GBA games as well as their Japanese descriptions. Hmm that is interesting, I do have a skype now so I guess we can talk about it some more if you want.

That song should be on there, I was able to find it right away on youtube. Try searching "Starfy 4 World 7 Map" on the search bar on youtube, and it should be the top video there. I also don't mind if we install an extension to embed audio files. -Kagegamer12 00:20, 16 May 2012 (CDT)

Sure, we can put them all into a list :D, either grouping them by stage or grouping them together by three central groups: enemies, obstacles, and bosses. And alright thanks! Kagegamer12 10:26, 29 May 2012 (CDT)
: Do you mind if I make a table for obstacles in your list? And also where would Arumarji fit in that list since he is capable of causing damage as well. Kagegamer12 12:30, 29 May 2012 (CDT)
:::Well, other than the tornadoes that make you dizzy, the breakable blocks, and the other obstacles that don't cause damage to you, I say it is good for now on attack power! Kagegamer12 08:50, 5 June 2012 (CDT)
Thanks
Thanks! :D I'll do some wiki editing... eventually. E3 was disappointing. Pikmin 3 looks fun, and the 2 Mario games and NintendoLand, but kinda disappointing, I was expecting a Metroid. :/ --<font face="segoe Print"><font color="gold">Star</font><font color="pink">phoria</font></font> (C·E) 20:44, 5 June 2012 (CDT)
:Yeah. To be honest, I am not excited about the two new Mario games. Pikmin 3 looks interesting. NintendoLand is actually much better than it seems, as I've heard. An F-Zero attraction was announced, and it seems like a Yoshi and Balloon Fight attraction will be coming. Nintendo posted pictures of all the series icons that will be in NintendoLand, and there was a Yoshi Egg and a Balloon. Is P-100 being published by Nintendo? Game and Wario looks interesting. Rayman Legends looks fantastic. I don't like Scribblenauts all too much, because I always come up with boring words. The "core" games announced look fun. Though, I'm not interested in ZombiU or Batman.

:Everyone is saying Ubisoft won E3, and I could agree with that. Sony and Microsoft also bombed.

:Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Paper Mario: Sticker Star look fun. Nintendo shouldn't have announced those until this year, in my honest opinion though. I'm still anticipating Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Heroes of Ruin. I believe Nintendo gave other third-party titles the spotlight, but I cannot remember which. There is still the 3DS thing today, I think Animal Crossing will be showed off, and hopefully a couple new titles. Next year's E3 will be much better, I think. At least I get to keep my money this year, lol. I'll just ask for everything for Christmas (except for the Wii U) since I have a lot of relatives.

:The titles for the Wii U I am excited for are... Pikmin 3 and Rayman Legends. I need more info on Game and Wario, NintendoLand, and P-100 before I consider those. Of course I'll get the New Mario Bros. U, but, it won't be a "must have". If Nintendo had simply announced a Metroid, a Star Fox, or a F-Zero, I would be content. However, they did not. Oh well. I'm expecting better from the 3DS conference today. Other than that, I get to keep my money. --<font face="segoe Print"><font color="gold">Star</font><font color="pink">phoria</font></font> (C·E) 17:18, 6 June 2012 (CDT)
::I remember Project Hammer. Project P-100 looks pretty sweet though. I hope it becomes a series for Nintendo. I've actually been pleased with Nintendo's effors lately. They are bringing us newer IPs and reviving older ones. I don't like the fact they are giving us all these Mario games though. Make a Metroid, a F-Zero, a Star Fox. I do want to see more new franchises from Nintendo though. You live in Europe, so it doesn't apply to you, but I hope they announce a Fire Emblem Awakening NA release. I can't wait to see more of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Paper Mario, and Animal Crossing as well as newer titles.

::I'm sorry to hear about your financial troubles, I was in the same boat not too long ago. Both my Mom and Dad were out of a job. My Dad works for real estate and the person who managed it all died. He found old friends of his working in real estate, and made a deal with them. My Mom couldn't find and nursing work after being laid off. She's found work, but is still having trouble finding a good job. However, I have two older sisters who are really successful, and they give support to my dad. (My parents are divorced) Things have gotten better for us, though. I'm sorry to hear about your dad as well. I can understand because I've had an uncle close to us who died 2 1/2 years ago. I also had my step-grandmother die. :::By "classic", I mean Kid Icarus, Punch Out!!, Donkey Kong Country, the return to 2D Mario, Sin and Punishment, etc. Nintendo has been reviving more well-known games like that. A Balloon Fight and Ice Climber game would be nice. Ice Climber could be an amazing platformer. The word "Ice" is holding it back for me though. If they were to revive it, they would need to do a whole lot. Ice setting would get boring. Maybe just "Climber", but even if they kept the name "Ice Climber", and had ice themes, I'm sure Nintendo could do something.

:::Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon looks really cool. I like the whole multiple mansions idea, and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here. Paper Mario Sticker Star looks incredible, but are there partners? If not, then I will be massively upset. Partners rule. I enjoyed Super Paper Mario, but the first two games were superior to it. I really like how in Sticker Star, real life objects can be affect everything. I really want to hear something about Animal Crossing: Jump Out. Animal Crossing is probably my most played Nintendo franchise in hours total trying to collect everything. <small>stupic golden axe...</small> I hope you can get eaten by sharks when swimming. Kind of like the scorpions and tarantulas. I hope Nintendo does more unique things with it though. I'm still not exactly excited for the two new mario games. Mario Bros. 2 feels like a Wario game. Mario Bros. U looks more interesting, and if I ever play multiplayer, I would definitely use the GamePad and kill all my friends :P As for Fire Emblem... Yay! That's all.

:::The 3DS Conference and E3 in particular stunk. I'm not going to bother with Castlevania. Were there any other 3rd party titles shown that looked good aside from Epic Mickey and Scribblenauts? Aside from Kingdom Hearts and Heroes of Ruin? Oh well, like I said, I can keep my money. --<font face="segoe Print"><font color="gold">Star</font><font color="pink">phoria</font></font> (C·E) 03:35, 9 June 2012 (CDT)
Oh crud Torch, I just saw the message you left me on Toriko Wiki back on October! I'm so sorry for not replying to it sooner! Are you still doing the new skin thing? Etc something? -The Forgotten Beast (talk) 06:41, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
Main Page
Sorry I'm late Torch and (somewhat late) Merry Christmas! What's the problem with the main page? Can you explain it to me in detail? -The Forgotten Beast (talk) 22:01, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
:That's OK. Yes. When you are on the Main Page itself (not any other page, it seems), the font size for the sidebar text, the tabs at the top of the page (user page, discussion, edit...) and the user links ((username), my talk, my preferences(...)) is made smaller. Additionally, the Starfy Wiki logo is cut off (you can't see all of Starly or Moe). The problem occurred when I added a new module called ":Template:SocialMedia" to :Template:Main Page Here is a picture to demonstrate this better. ==Account Creation Issues?==
Hey Torchikens, a user named ToastUltimatum has been attempting to make a Starfy Wiki account for awhile now and has been experiencing issues that he is not experiencing at other NIWA wikis. It seems that the issue is exclusive to Starfy Wiki. I'll give you the direct quote from him so that you can look into the situation more (if there is a problem at all), just thought that I would let you know:

*[10:03:34 AM] TaleOfTheToaster: Right, I've been trying to make an account on Starfy Wiki for the past few minutes, but the CAPTCHA question won't show up. And when I ignore it and hit Create account anyway, I just get a server error on IE and a blank screen on Firefox, so clearly the CAPTCHA is necessary despite it not showing up
*[10:03:36 AM] TaleOfTheToaster: Does anyone else wanna try making an account?
*[10:12:32 AM] TaleOfTheToaster: And yes, I have cookies enabled
*[10:16:14 AM] TaleOfTheToaster: I also got the CAPTCHA to load on Golden Sun Universe, so I think there must just be a problem with Starfy Wiki"

Re: Thank you
It's my pleasure. I have been working on and off on The Legendary Starfy in regards to speedrunning for years, and recently decided to get into the Japan only games. Very enjoyable series. I pretty much found those glitches while speedrunning the games, and I just found another graphical glitch while doing a run of the first game, which i just took the time to learn, (https://www.twitch.tv/diamond44444444/v/107860449). In regards to the correction for the enemy cards, I spent about 45 minutes looking for the Upon in 9-3 when I was getting 100% and I didn't want anybody else to fall victim to that.
I saw your channel on youtube a few months ago (At least I think it's your channel) and saw the skip you found in 5-5 of Densetsu no Stafy 2 and other things. That skip in particular was pretty cool and saves approximately 40-60 seconds in a speedrun, but given that it's already over an hour into a 4+ hour run I really won't be doing it in an RTA.
(I don't know exactly how to use this talk feature, so my apologies if i'm doing something wrong)
-Diamond (talk) 04:50, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Re: Curious. Guidebooks do have the occasional error in them, so I guess it is understandable.
On the topic of the 5-5 skip and the original person who discovered it, I was going through that TASlog that you have in the description of that video and was looking at the video names for Stafy. A few ones really caught my eye, including the stafy3-stapy-doublejump (I'm implying that it applies to Stafi), the stafy3-rocket, the stafy2-cornerboost, and especially the stafy1_pearl_glitch. I would presume that you have accessed these files before since you found the 5-5 skip from it, so are you able to access these files and tell me what they are comprised of? I'm also curious what exactly is in the stafy2 parts of those files, since the game has not had much development in terms of speedrunning except for a really bad RTA that I did and an incomplete TAS that comprises only 3 levels.
In regards to the stafy1_pearl_glitch, if it pertains to obtaining pearls fast I would really like to know about it, since grinding pearls in that game for a 100% speedrun would be extremely tedious and annoying, almost as much so as in The Legendary Starfy 100%, which requires ~30 goes through 9-7 to get enough pearls. == Hi! ==

Hey Torchickens! Sorry I didn't see this until now... I've been doing fine despite being usually busy with life. Do you like your current flat? This wiki pretty much covered a majority of the content from the Starfy series in all other aspects. It has been a long time since Starfy has had a new game, but at least Starfy returns in the new Smash. Mermaid also returned in the new Smash as a spirit. Also thanks for keeping maintenance for the wiki after all this time! What kind of RPG game have you been making? Did you also try out the recent remake of Kanto? --Kagegamer12 (talk) 04:13, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

:At the very least, you will own a place that you can call your very own. ^^ it is nice that the Smash series made more than one reference to the Starfy series. The game could have only mentioned Starfy alone, but the game decided to add other Starfy series characters in there as well.

:Sounds pretty deep, let me know of the progress you made with the game after awhile. Celeste kind of looked tough, but I might give it a look some day. Well you should join a group that shares your struggle if it will make you less lonely as a result. Most likely those people would share that discrimination as well, and there is more strength united than if tackled alone.

:I can agree to that. It is much better if projects can be done at your own pace than doing them on either a deadline or in a bad time. :D

:I also picked the Eevee version! While I do prefer battling over the Pokemon Go catch mechanics, I like having Pokemon show up visibly. I can pick and choose who I want to catch without having to deal with random encounters all the time. The arrangement does sound pretty nice despite not being able to use a bike in that game.

:Well I've tried out some of the recent Nintendo games like Super Mario Odyssey, Kirby Star Allies, Breath of the Wild, Mega Man 11, and Pokemon Ultra Moon. Have you heard of Undertale? The game seems most similar to Earthbound, but it is pretty unique on its own. The characters are all great and memorable, and the story changes based on how you deal with enemies and bosses. You can even potentially beat the game without killing anyone. --Kagegamer12 (talk) 21:35, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

::Yeah! Smash Bros has really done a good job showing off obscure Nintendo games and characters in general. My favorite obscure series personally is Chibi Robo.

::It is your game, so convey your message how you want it to be seen by others. I played a bit of VVVVVVV, it was alright. I also tried out Gunman Clive and Cave Story for the 3DS. Gunman Clive was a pretty decent run 'n gun platformer. You can even play as a duck that can only dodge everything. Cave Story was a pretty good intense platformer too with interesting characters and plot.

::As long as the two of remain good friends with each other, you won't be alone. ^^

::Yeah, I think Evie is a nice name too! Right, especially in caves where these encounters happen all the time.

::Well, it can get pretty dark if you kill monsters in that game, and the underground itself may seem unsettling in certain areas. However, the game does have some dynamic and quirky characters. If you spare your enemies they will become your friends. If you try to kill everyone, certain bosses will fight you as if you are the true evil of this world. While Flowey is scary, the rest of the characters aren't that bad. Your character can literally go on a date with a couple of the bosses.

::I've done a marathon of all the Classic, X, and Starforce games in the past including some of the spinoffs. What do you think of the Mega Man series in general?

::Happy New Year to you too! Yeah I have the game, and I beaten the story mode. I don't really have a main yet, but I liked playing as Little Mac against the spirits. == RE: Insect ==

So I've managed to locate a "master table" of every object in every map. There's a table at <tt>0x15C018</tt> that's 23 pointers long, 1 for each stage. Inside each of those pointers is another table of pointers corresponding to each area, and inside those pointers is another table for each map, which leads to 4 bytes telling you how many objects are in the map, and the next 4 bytes are a pointer to the map's array of object data (24 bytes specify each object). I've been meaning to put all my findings into a Google site to be easier to read, it's taking a while 'cause I can't make classic Google sites anymore and have to make a "New" one. (this is also a reminder to migrate your Google site soon).

This is another situation where editing the ROM directly is just much more efficient. For a fast way to look at objects, I changed the 4 bytes at <tt>0x19CC98</tt>. This is <tt>0x00000003</tt> by default and affects one of the first pearls you see in Stage 1-1 (subsequent visits). To get the insect, I just changed this value to <tt>0x00000005</tt>. I can most likely change this pearl to other objects (like doors), but they'll break unless I adjust the behavior parameters (the 16 following bytes in the ROM). Dimedime (talk) 14:14, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Oh yeah, I've tallied every object in every map, and it appears that this insect is completely unreferenced in the game, even in the test stage. So, the only way to make it to appear is to replace an existing object like I did with editing the ROM. Dimedime (talk) 14:16, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
:Thank you so much! ^^ I'll experiment with this information. I was actually trying to do the same (just a way to spawn any enemy or object though really) at some point but gave up until I had more insight; so this really helps, and I can probably use that to make articles for every unique (indexed) object in Starfy 2. Maybe Starfy 3 and maybe even 1 use the same kind of data structure? Interesting, while speculating, I wonder if it's in Starfy 1 too, and/or what kind of unused objects the original may have. I also wondered about the jellyfish character which according to an interview Starfy was originally considered to be, but if there's anything left of it at all maybe it just became Jueri. Torchickens (talk) 15:36, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
:Oh no, sorry to hear that and I hope they don't break the old Google Sites completely. Thanks I'll back up everything from my sites for now. Also I reached my storage limit on it recently so had to delete one of the "other game save files", but it was a Looney Tunes game and (I overlooked) the save I had didn't even make it far in the story or complete it, so I suppose that was reasonable.
Hey there! I was wondering if you'd be willing to make me an interface admin. I'd like to do some adjustments to make the wiki more accessible, and resolve some issues such as overflowing bullets, etc. I've described some changes I'd like to make at MediaWiki_talk:Monobook.css. Thank you! ~<span style="color:#07517C;">Super</span><span style="color:#6FA23B;">Hamster</span> <small>Talk Contribs</small> 20:37, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
Nintendo Switch Online
Good Morning,
Two days ago, it was announced that the original 3 Starfy games were going to be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Doing my normal browsing of the Nintendo Wikis, I checked this wiki's main page to see if they had caught the news, and to my surprise nothing was listed there. If I was able to, I would of added the news myself but I cannot. I've gone and edited the pages for the games added to address the news, but would you be able to edit the wiki's news page? Thank you, and have a great day. --Logangsta (talk) 01:23, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
:Sorry, some miscommunication. For whatever reason password reset got glitched for me on Torchickens. I'll check my emails again. I'm losing my mind as I stayed up 6 days straight. == Main Page Social Media Links==
I believe the social media portion of the main page is in need of an overhaul. To start, the Pufftop Discord server has effectively replaced the Starfy subreddit it spawned from, and is multitudes more popular than it ever was. I believe a link to the Discord would should replace the link to the inactive subreddit. Next, Colorful Planet for years now has failed at their end of the bargain with the banner-for-banner relationship. The site is almost entirely scrubbed of any Starfy content, including referrals to this Wiki. Further, Starfy's Journal is a decade old unfinished web comic that is currently a dead link. Now is the perfect opportunity to replace it with a link to the Star of Sand Ocean Wiki, a new and regularly updated pair of Starfy web comics. Furthermore, I do not believe that the Starfy Fan Club should have been featured in the first place. It was clearly made by someone young in their spare time, and has not been updated since. Finally, the YouTube topic function has updated and the current link is dead. Now there is an individual channel for each of the five games.

Two more things. First, I think there should be a link to the Starfy Alliance. It is also an old website without updates, but I think it would be cool if people sill made themselves members of the alliance. Second, the Project Pufftop Twitter account should be featured, if only to represent the Twitter presence of Starfy fans. -- Jubei (talk) 17:02, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
:Thank you for the input ^^. I've updated it, and also added a link to Surain. Torchickens (talk) 08:53, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
Box Art Uploader Error
I was trying to upload some higher-resolution versions of the GBA Starfy box arts (which can be found here, go into the shared folder), however I was alerted that the page was protected by you. Would you be able to upload these files instead for me? These files are much better than what we currently have on the wiki. --Logangsta (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2024 (UTC)

It is a piece of oden with a cross shaped stick pierced through it. In the story, Gaganmo was hurt by Konk. He/she dropped his Oden and had his/her Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle damaged, so Gaganmo asks Starfy, Starly and Moe to find the Oden and a new Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle. Gaganmo teaches Starfy the Glide ability so that he can Glide over to a door that leads to the items.

Later, Starfy, Starly and Moe find Jojiro in his shop who gives them a new Giant Flying Squirrel Mantle and an Oden for free. Princess Peach is a character in the Mario series who acts as Mario's love interest and a damsel-in-distress. She made a cameo as Starfy and Starly's costume in Densetsu no Starfy 4. Peach also appeared as a playable character in [[Super Smash Bros. Starfy appeared as an enemy in Super Princess Peach, probably because the game was developed by TOSE who develop The Legendary Starfy games.
Super Princess Peach
Starfy appeared in World 2-5, 5-5, and 6-4 as an enemy called "Starfish" in Super Princess Peach.
Areas Starfy appears
#In World 2-5, he swims back and forth in a shallow area of water, and he will jump up into the sky and leave. Peach must hit him as he jumps up.
#In World 5-5, he's asleep on the grass. Peach must walk slowly up to him, then attack him, so he doesn't wake up.
#In World 6-4, he's standing on a ledge above where the player is. He'll leave after a few seconds. To reach him, Peach must use her Gloom power.

IRC is a way of real-time communication designed specifically for editors of the wiki.

The The Legendary Starfy series, known in Japan as the Densetsu no Stafy series (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー シリーズ), it is debatable if it was formally known as the Legend of Stafy (from the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga cameo) and The Legend of Stafy series (from the credits of the leaked iQue prototype leaked long after it was produced) is a video game series that was published by Nintendo and developed by TOSE.

The series is about Starfy (Japanese: スタフィー), "a legend" who is the prince of a kingdom high above the ocean, above the clouds called Pufftop. Joining Starfy's adventure is Starfy's best friend Moe the clam and after the events of Densetsu no Starfy 2, Starfy's younger sister, Starly. In all five games, something causes Starfy to fall into the ocean and fight evil. So far, all of the Starfy games have been released exclusively for handheld platforms.

The games are officially known as "Marine Action" (Japanese: マリンアクション) games due to a good portion of the game taking place underwater, although not all stages in the games are set underwater, however, official creative genre names for Nintendo games is not uncommon.

There are occasionally platformer elements in the series, and the official English Nintendo mini-site, as well as the Nintendo of Australia mini-site, lists the latest game in the series, The Legendary Starfy as a platformer game.

Others may call it a "Marine Platform(er)" game, but unlike "Marine Action", it may have not been called this officially.

Gameplay generally involves Starfy and/or his younger sister, Starly, solving the problems of other characters while defeating enemies and bosses on their quest in bringing peace to Pufftop, or in the Nintendo DS games, another kingdom, including the Amiy Kingdom (Densetsu no Starfy 4) and Planet Bunnera (The Legendary Starfy).

History
Densetsu no Starfy (GBC) / Densetsu no Starfy

The The Legendary Starfy series originated when Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami was asked by his boss to come up with a kind of 'floaty platformer'. Later, he worked together with TOSE producer Yasuhiro Minamimoto and the end result, Densetsu no Starfy, starred Starfy; a starfish like creature with traits of a celestial star, although a jellyfish was another consideration; who could have speculatively became a character such as the Jueri.

The first game in the series, Densetsu no Starfy was originally meant to be released for the Game Boy Color. A trial demo of the Game Boy Color game was shown at Nintendo Space World 2000 but development later moved to the Game Boy Advance. Various changes were made during the transition for example, the Japanese name of Moe changed from "Kyororon" to "Kyorosuke". Prior to this, it was the untitled balloon/bubble pushing games; a series of experiments between Hitoshi Yamagami and his "boss".

Due to relatively good reception of the game, four sequels were released, namely two more Game Boy Advance games Densetsu no Starfy 2, Densetsu no Starfy 3, and Nintendo DS games Densetsu no Starfy 4 and The Legendary Starfy (released in Japan as Densetsu no Stafy Taiketsu! Daiiru Kaizokudan and completely different to Densetsu no Starfy 4).

There are numerous The Legendary Starfy series merchandise sold to promote the series, such as stuffed toys and CDs. Mangaka have also worked on manga about the series.

The fifth game, The Legendary Starfy is significantly more child-friendly, and introduced a completely different art-style, making the characters look chibi or like plush dolls.

Conversely, the story and tone of Densetsu no Starfy 3 is known for being particularly dark, with a personification of Evil and slavery, confirmation of the actual death of three characters (soft spoiler: 1, 2 and 3 (a group of characters)) and other potentially questionable themes for an otherwise child-friendly game such as an evil clown called Mad Piero. Densetsu no Starfy 2 also alluded to the death of Moe's mother, though was less heavy in its portrayals. In this sense, Densetsu no Starfy 3 is similar to another Nintendo-published game Tomato Adventure also released during the Game Boy Advance era; a generally child friendly game but with a few very dark themes (such as the dark portrayal and music of REM and Non-REM Labyrinth), or the Custom Robo series and the selling of illegal parts (this phenomena is known as "Yami Nintendo" in Japan).

According to Nintendo Online Magazine, Densetsu no Starfy 2 also surprised TOSE's Akio Imai for its hidden depth (possibly its themes on the importance of family connections).

Reception
According to an interview with Yasuhiro Minamimoto in Nintendo Power, the first Densetsu no Starfy was well received and that is why TOSE would go on to make a sequel. Eventually, a whole series was made due to continuing good reception, including Densetsu no Starfy 2 and Densetsu no Starfy 3 for the Game Boy Advance, Densetsu no Starfy 4 and The Legendary Starfy for the Nintendo DS.

The Legendary Starfy series is a relatively minor franchise in terms of sales, compared to Nintendo's more popular franchises such as the Pokémon series, Mario series, The Legend of Zelda series but still has a cult following, and was successful in terms of its continuity and reception. There was also a large amount of merchandise produced, though acquiring some of it is difficult, with some such as the stuffed toys in particular Big Starfy stuffed toy and many more rare items being sought after by dedicated collectors.

Out of the five games in the series, Densetsu no Starfy 2 sold the most copies with 298,967 sold by the end of 2003, giving it the position of number 4 on Japanese sales charts. Since the release of Densetsu no Starfy 3 however, it seems that the sales of the games have continually dropped, with The Legendary Starfy selling a relatively low 126,428 copies in Japan by the end of 2008. However, this ignores overseas sales of The Legendary Starfy, and many people have grown up with the overseas version; introducing them to an otherwise inaccessible franchise.

Fan translation
Fan translations of The Legendary Starfy series

Unofficially, people have wanted or expressed interest in fan translations of The Legendary Starfy series in terms of hacking the ROM to actually play an English game, such as the early Blackmage907. After a dormancy in the conceptual stages of this (circa 2012-), of which the conceptual stage was important because of Normmatt's variable-width font hack, User:Torchickens and Pablitox formed Starfy Translation Team and the related Discord group years later. In between that, Torchickens uploaded experiments of hacking English text into Densetsu no Starfy of her own, via her secondary YouTube channel (/user/Torchickens), using both her hex editor/limited GBA programming knowledge and also making use of the Atlas setup (a tool for applying fan translations to the ROM quicker) and Densetsu no Starfy text dump produced during the conceptual stages.

Today the ROM hack of Densetsu no Starfy by Starfy Translation Team in terms of just the text is mainly complete. Work needs to be started on texts stored as graphics, and typos and newly introduced glitches need to be fixed. Fan translation work has since been started on some of the other Densetsu no Starfy games.

Without consent, reproduction carts containing the fan translation have been sold online; i.e. there have been some Game Boy Advance carts in a blue shell with a sticker with The Legendary Starfy art and a seascape but containing the fan translation beta, however the reception to this in Starfy Translation Team has been mild. This can happen with fan translations, and may encourage some projects to add like a 'splash screen' noting details like it is an unofficial product, is not to be sold, after the game is booted-up, like the one in the Mother 3 fan translation initiated by Clyde Mandelin.

Other non-ROM hacking translation groups or people are important, such as the works of Autumchild on YouTube, or Starfy Wiki itself. Prior to this, there were a few English fans who attempted to interpret the games, such as via the the Tobira Majin translation guide by NessEggman. Another key Starfy Wiki contributor in terms of translation was User:Star Light.
In an interview with Nintendo and TOSE in 2009, Hitoshi Yamagami suggested that there are plans for a sixth Starfy game in the series. When Hitoshi Yamagami was asked by Nintendo Life whether are "any plans for a sixth Starfy title in the works?", he replied "Yes!" with a long pause and then a laugh. However, no further information has since surfaced about the game.
Manga
There have been two series of The Legendary Starfy series manga collated in tankōbon form. The first series, simply known as Densetsu no Starfy was based on the events of Densetsu no Starfy, Densetsu no Starfy 2 and Densetsu no Starfy 3. It was frequently submitted to issues of CoroCoro Comic from June 2002 (before the official release of the game Densetsu no Starfy in June 2002) until October 2005, and it was illustrated by manga artist Yumiko Sudō. The manga was published by Shogakukan and Nintendo and TOSE own the copyright to the tankōbon.

The second series, known as Densetsu no Starfy R (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィーR) ran from April 2006 until April 2008, and it was illustrated by Suzuo Yadaka (Japanese: 矢高鈴央, やたか すずお) as a follow up to the original Densetsu no Starfy manga series based on the events of Densetsu no Starfy 4. Densetsu no Starfy R is an abbreviation of Densetsu no Starfy Returns (Japanese: デンセツノスタフィーリターンズ). Like the first series, it was published by Shogakukan and submitted to CoroCoro Comic. Nintendo and TOSE own the copyright to the tankōbon.

In addition to the two aforementioned manga series, a series of The Legendary Starfy manga illustrated by Sayori Abe predating the manga by Yumiko Sudō appeared in appeared in certain pages in issues of Shogakukan's Separate Grade Learning Magazines (Japanese: 小学館の学年別学習雑誌), from April 2002 up to December 2002 (inclusive) and was never released in tankōbon form.

In 2008, at least two manga based on The Legendary Starfy were created and published in the magazine Character Parfait, starting from volume 8.

Included in the November 2008 issue of Enterbrain's Video Game Magazine is a small manga called Starfy's Adventure (Japanese: スタフィーのぼうけん) based on The Legendary Starfy, as well as three manga included in the magazine itself called Defeat the Enemy!, Hidden Room Discovery! and Combined by Transformation!.

Localization of the series overseas
English
Although there are currently five games in The Legendary Starfy series, The Legendary Starfy (Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daiiru Kaizokudan in Japan) is the only game to have been localized and officially released outside of Japan. Nintendo of America officially localized The Legendary Starfy and released the game on June 8, 2009, just over a year from the Japanese release and one day earlier than scheduled. Nintendo of Australia later released and produced the game in Australasia in October 2009, although currently no other branches of Nintendo have officially released the game elsewhere. The Australian and North American ROMs are exactly the same, but their packaging is slightly different.

Prototypes
An English localisation prototype for the first game also exists with its own font. It appears to have been intended for an official English release, based on the account of an anonymous owner of a prototype, but cancelled. In the prototype version, Moe is known as "Kyoro" (shortened from his Japanese name Kyorosuke), and one of the conversations with him features profanity (an easy mistake to mistake from translation of derogatory Japanese words without regard to connotations, audience and impact).

The prototype came with 128M flash memory in a regular colored Game Pak but resembles a special type of cartridge such as a rumble or tilt cart. It is also marked with a red sticker with the writing Tose 四条分室 (Shijo Branch Office) No 062 (possibly Shijo Street in Kyoto; the city where Tose operates). The prototype was found on an eBay listing from a seller of various prototypes, according to an October 2018 archived 4ch thread.

This coincides with an official account by Nintendo Treehouse but regarding a different game; the fifth and only localized official The Legendary Starfy game for Nintendo DS, though it is not known if Bihldorff misremembered the game for the original.

Canada
There is an obscure Canadian box art variant, but the game itself is still in English.
Chinese (iQue) prototypes
In March 2019, unreleased but official Chinese versions of Densetsu no Starfy and Densetsu no Starfy 2 were leaked to the public. These were reportedly intended for the iQue editions of Nintendo hardware (likely the iQue Game Boy Advance), which are Chinese equivalents to the English hardware. In China, the series is known as Sitafei De Chuanshuo (Chinese: 斯塔非的传说).

South Korea
The Legendary Starfy was registered as a trademark by Nintendo of Korea, but no games in the series have been released there.

Staff views on localization of past games
Nintendo of America appear to have no plans of localizing past games in the series. In a 2009 conference call set up by Nintendo between Nintendo Life and six developers of The Legendary Starfy, producer Hitoshi Yamagami joked that the reason why Starfy took so long to debut in the US was that he 'was swimming all the way from Japan' and explained that the series was always developed for a Japanese audience. The developers stated that they always wanted to bring Starfy to the US, but that Nintendo of America deemed the games 'too Japanese' for American audiences. In fact, various elements of the games such as certain Items and Stuff are full of Japanese cultural references. Hitoshi Yamagami, however, stated in the conference call that although TOSE had no intention of releasing the previous The Legendary Starfy series games, the possibly of releasing them exists "if Starfy proves to be a huge hit and fans demand that they have the first four Starfy games".

According to Yasuhiro Minamimoto, the development team were conscious of the sales of The Legendary Starfy from the planning stage, so he feels that is why the game made it out of Japan. Despite this, there are various localization changes in the fifth game, where for example the manga style cutscenes in Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daiiru Kaizokudan were changed and made to read from left to right instead of right to left.
