Japanese Name チュータ, Chūta
Fan Name* Chuta
Species Octopus
Affiliates Starfy, Moe, Ootaruika
Location/Residence Stranded Whale, Pitch Dark Cave, Kachiwari Iceberg
First Appearance Densetsu no Starfy

Chuta is a reddish octopus who has only appeared in the Game Boy Advance games. He is usually the one who teaches Starfy the Mighty Star Spin. In Densetsu no Starfy he was usually in an octopus pot, but he loses the pot in Densetsu no Starfy 2 due to a bad storm. Ootaruika gives Starfy a Barrel, which Chuta happily accepts. He has since worn a Barrel in Densetsu no Starfy 3.

In Densetsu no Starfy 2

In the third stage of Pitch Black Cavern, Starfy and Moe meet up with Chutah who seems off to Moe. Chutah then explains that he lost his Octo-Pot in a storm, and that he will lose energy if he does not get inside it again. He starts seeing a field of flowers and his great grandmother calling him, to which Moe panics and tells Starfy to find the Octo-Pot. Before Starfy leaves, Chutah teaches him the Mighty Star Spin so Starfy may reach Big Barrel Squid, who Chutah believes may be able to help. Once Starfy meets with Big Barrel Squid, he gives Starfy a Barrel as a replacement for the Octo-Pot, which Chutah happily takes. Even stating that it’s “a perfect fit” and “better than the old one”.

In Densetsu no Starfy 3

Starfy and Moe meet up with Chutah once again in the third stage of Shaved Iceburg, where Chutah tries to teach Starfy the Mighty Star Spin, but can’t due to Starfy’s unwillingness to learn it. However, after Moe tells Starfy off for not caring enough about Starly (due a fight in the stage prior), Starfy is willing to learn the Mighty Star Spin and uses it to save a trapped Starly.

Name Origin

  • Chutah's name could be a play on “Tutor”, as his name and Tutor share the same Japanese spelling (playing off of his role of teaching Starfy the Mighty Star Spin in every game up until 4). In addition, it could be based on his speech quirk of “Chu”, as well as being a joke of how Octopuses are caught by them getting into pots/jars, with 壺中 (literally “Inside a Jar/Pot) being pronounced as “Tsubo chu”.

Trivia

  • In Starfy 2, after Chutah explains how his Octo-Pot was lost, he says that he is an “Octopota” (ツボチューぞく, literally “Inside Pot Clan/Family”), and that he will slowly lose (presumably life) energy if they are not in one. While we do not see any “Octopotas” from Starfy 2 onwards, it can be assumed that they are the origin for items such as the Octopus Headband.
  • In Starfy 2’s Post Game, Chutah states that he plans to decorate the Barrel with coral, pearls, and cherry blossoms. However, when Starfy and Moe meet Chutah in Starfy 3 at Shaved Iceburg, his sprite is not changed. Due to Starfy 3 retconning certain events (such as the conflicting status of the Puchi Oguras), Starfy 2’s Post Game may not be canon, and Chutah’s desire to decorate his new “Octo-Pot” may not have been carried out. But this may just be a way to reuse the pre-made sprite from 2.
