There are two types of special playing cards (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー トランプ, ''Densetsu no Starfy Trumps'') based on ''[[Densetsu no Starfy]]''. The playing cards come in two versions - a blue edition called 'Starfy Swimming in the Sea' (Japanese: 海を泳ぐスタフィー) and a pink edition called 'Starfy Standing on the Beach' (Japanese: 浜辺でたたずむスタフィー). The cards are split into King, Queen, Jack, Joker, 2-10 and Ace. Each individual card is 58x89 mm.

The success of the The Legendary Starfy series has contributed to the production of additional games in the franchise, manga and additional products. This page lists officially licensed merchandise by Nintendo, many of which have been used by Nintendo to promote the games.

Games

The North American box-art of The Legendary Starfy, known in Japan as Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daīru Kaizokudan (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー　たいけつ！ダイール海賊団) the latest game in the series and the first Legendary Starfy game to have been localised into English.

There are currently a total of five games in The Legendary Starfy series, the first three of which were released for the Game Boy Advance, and the last two have been released for the Nintendo DS. The games sold relatively well in Japan, contributing to the production of sequels. The fifth game, known as The Legendary Starfy (Densetsu no Starfy Taiketsu! Daīru Kaizokudan (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー　たいけつ！ダイール海賊団) was not advertised as a direct sequel, and much of the artwork was designed in a different way to make the characters look like plush dolls. The Legendary Starfy was the first game to be localised into English and sold outside of Japan in North America and Australasia. In the localisation process, there were various localisation changes, for example the manga-style cutscenes were changed to be read from left to right instead of right to left.

Manga

There have been two main series of The Legendary Starfy manga. The first series, simply known as Densetsu no Starfy was based on the events of Densetsu no Starfy, Densetsu no Starfy 2 and Densetsu no Starfy 3. The first two volumes of this manga series were available for purchase in the form of a booklet. It was frequently submitted to issues of CoroCoro Comic from June 2002 (before the official release of the game Densetsu no Starfy in June 2002) until October 2005, and it was illustrated by manga artist Yumiko Sutō. The manga was published by Shogakukan and was officially approved by Nintendo.

The second series, known as Densetsu no Starfy R (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィーR) ran from April 2006 until April 2008, and it was illustrated by Suzuo Yadaka (Japanese: 矢高鈴央, やたか すずお) as a follow up to the original Densetsu no Starfy manga series based on the events of Densetsu no Starfy 4. Densetsu no Starfy R is an abbreviation of Densetsu no Starfy Returns (Japanese: デンセツノスタフィーリターンズ) and the manga series has often been referred to as such. Like the first series, it was officially approved by Nintendo, published by Shogakukan and submitted to CoroCoro Comic, however only the first issue was available in the form of a booklet.

In addition to the two aforementioned manga series, a series of The Legendary Starfy manga predating the manga by Yumiko Sudō appeared in appeared in certain pages in issues of Shogakukan Grade Comics (Japanese: 小学, literally "elementary school"), including the April 2002 issue of Shogakukan Third Grade, but was not distributed in tankōbon format. A free-gift with the November 2008 issue of the Enterbrain Video Game Magazine was a manga book called Mini Mini Manga Book: Starfy's Adventure (Japanese: ミニミニマンガ本！スタフィーのぼうけん) based on The Legendary Starfy.

Nintendo Official Guidebooks

The Nintendo Official Guidebook for Densetsu no Stafy Taiketsu! Daīru Kaizokudan

Nintendo Official Guidebooks (Japanese: 任天堂公式ガイドブック) are strategy guides for Nintendo games published by Shogakukan. Nintendo Official Guidebooks have been released for all five games in The Legendary Starfy series under Shogakukan's Wonder Life Special imprint. The guidebooks offer help with completing the game.

CDs

There are two CDs based on The Legendary Starfy series. The first, Densetsu no Starfy c/w Boyfriend's Rookie (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー c/w BOYFRIEND'S ROOKIE) was sold as a tie-in to promote Densetsu no Starfy. The second, Starfy no Daibōken (Japanese: スタフィーの大冒険, literally Starfy's Great Adventure), was sold as a tie-in to promote Densetsu no Starfy 2, but was not advertised on the Densetsu no Starfy 2 official mini-site for reasons unclear. Both CDs include renditions of the series Title Song.

Playing cards

There are two types of special playing cards (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー トランプ, Densetsu no Starfy Trumps) based on Densetsu no Starfy. The playing cards come in two versions - a blue edition called 'Starfy Swimming in the Sea' (Japanese: 海を泳ぐスタフィー) and a pink edition called 'Starfy Standing on the Beach' (Japanese: 浜辺でたたずむスタフィー). The cards are split into King, Queen, Jack, Joker, 2-10 and Ace. Each individual card is 58x89 mm.

Stuffed toys

There are two Starfy stuffed toys, as well as a series of beanbag toys.

The first stuffed toy; the Okkina Nuigurumi (Japanese: おっきなぬいぐるみスタフィー) (literally 'big stuffed toy Starfy') was produced by Tomy and is advertised on the goods section of the official Densetsu no Starfy mini-site as a cute stuffed toy that can also be used as a cushion.

The beanbag toys are known as the Mascot Beanbags (Japanese: お手玉マスコット). They include the blue bear Kigurumi, the Balloon, Starfy with the Magic Set, Starfy riding the Catfish Boat and Starfy on his own. These toys were advertised on page 271 of the Densetsu no Starfy 2 Nintendo Official Guidebooks published by Shogakukan.

The last stuffed toy; the Densetsu no Starfy 4 Nuigurumi is a small stuffed toy of Starfy based on his appearance in Densetsu no Starfy 4. It was produced by San-Ei Boeki Trade.

Fairy Tale Land (Japanese: メルヘンランド) is a series of products produced by Aiko for line drawings of mascots and promotional characters which can be colored in and then baked on a hot plate and added to tiles or glass windows.

One series of line drawings is based on Densetsu no Starfy and includes line drawings of Starfy with the Balloon and Starfy wearing the Kigurumi.

Confectionery

Densetsu no Starfy Gummi Candy

Ezaki Glico have produced two different kinds of Densetsu no Starfy confectionery, both of which were released on March 4, 2003. The first kind of confectionery, Densetsu no Starfy Perotan (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー ペロタン), are pendulum shaped chocolate lollipops of Starfy when Dizzy and the Mermaid. The second kind of confectionery, Densetsu no Starfy Gummi Candy (Japanese: 伝説のスタフィー グミ) are orange and apple flavored gummi candy.

The Legendary Starfy review merchandise

The review merchandise with a review copy of The Legendary Starfy

Journalists who ordered the review copy of The Legendary Starfy received a Starfy t-shirt, The Legendary Starfy stickers and a The Legendary Starfy water bottle. [3]. These items were later available from the Nintendo World Store but the Starfy t-shirts were only available in medium, while previous Starfy t-shirts were available in large. [4] The Legendary Starfy stickers were also available at the Starfy Toys "R" Us events on June 7, 2009. The stickers include Starfy, Bunston, Moe, the Mermaid, Starly and The Terrible Trio.

The video gaming blog Joystiq also ran a The Legendary Starfy "prize pack" competition from September 10th, 2009 until 3:00PM ET on September 16th, 2009 where commenters had a chance to win all three of the promotional items by telling Joystiq what their favorite item in the pack is. [5]

Game Boy Advance cartridge erasers

Game Boy Advance cartridge erasers (Japanese: ゲームボーイアドバンスカートリッジ型消しゴム) are miniature Game Boy Advance game boxes that have an eraser based on the relevant game inside. The erasers are shaped just like real Game Boy Advance game cartridges, and have that game's relevant sticker. The erasers were available inside capsule machines in 2005 for a limited time only. [6] The erasers came in different colors including white, pink, blue and yellow.

The now defunct online importer Lik-Sang also had these erasers for sale on their website. They would choose a random eraser much like how consumers would receive a random eraser from capsule machines.

Two of the Game Boy Advance cartridge erasers are based on Densetsu no Starfy and Densetsu no Starfy 2.

Miniature Nintendo DS game cases

There have been multiple series of miniature Nintendo DS game cases including Nintendo DS Game Card eraser, Nintendo DS Mini Figure & DS Card Case Twin Strap (and its successors Nintendo DS Mini Figure & DS Card Case Twin Strap 2 and Nintendo DS Lite Mini Figure & DS Card Case Twin Strap) and Nintendo DS Perfect Collection which include miniature game cases of Densetsu no Starfy 4. They were presumably available from capsule machines in Japan.

Nintendo DS Perfect Collection is a series of game cases with a key-ring attached to them. Later in June 2006, a second set of game cases in the Nintendo DS Perfect Collection series was released called Nintendo DS Perfect Collection 2, which included a game case of Densetsu no Starfy 4.
